Blue Eye Shadow Is Officially Back for Spring

2 min read
We first spotted it on the runways at New York Fashion Week’s
spring/summer 2026 shows
sheer pastels at Private Policy, blended denim at Schiaparelli, icy shimmers at Jane Wade, and full-on aqua eyes and lashes at Anna Sui. Then came the red carpet debuts, with stars like
Zendaya
and
Zara Larsson
embracing diffused cerulean shadow and metallic teal liner. Finally, after clocking the
beauty looks at the Met Gala
(where mermaid beauty and vibrant lids dominated), I think we can make it official: blue eye shadow is back, baby.

The colorful trend that reigned supreme in the ’80s is making an exciting return in 2026, albeit with a modern twist. “Instead of overly-frosted blues, we’re seeing soft denim tones, smoky navies, and diffused washes of color that feel modern, wearable, and editorial,” says professional makeup artist
Shayanna Lundi
. Celebrity makeup artist
Christian Briceno
agrees: “Makeup is fun again, but in a cleaner, more intentional way. We’re seeing a shift away from perfectly blended neutrals only toward colors that feel wearable and styled.”
On a personal level, I love seeing color of any kind reenter the beauty space. I fell in love with makeup in 2016, when colorful cut creases, bold lips, and artistic expression flourished. I’d spend hours at my vanity after school experimenting with loose glitter pigments and neon liquid liners, only to wash it all off before studying for a math test. But it’s not just nostalgia driving this resurgence. “After years of ultra-minimal beauty, color feels exciting again,” Lundi says.

Whether you’re going all out or leaning into minimalism, blue eye shadow rarely misses the mark. “It’s one of the few colors that can be read as both nostalgic and futuristic at once,” explains Briceno. “It can be soft like a watercolor haze, or graphic and electric like a fashion accessory. And it makes the whites of the eyes look brighter, instantly sharpens the mood of the look, and turns even minimal makeup into something editorial.”
A hazy wash of pale blue with luminous skin feels incredibly chic for day, while layered denim and cobalt tones create beautiful dimension for evening. “I also love navy smudged into the lash line, because it defines the eyes without feeling as harsh as black,” adds Lundi. “Even just a touch of electric blue or navy at the roots of the lashes can modernize an entire look.”
